Come find me at Aspiring Mama’s place today for Story Time Saturdays (yes, a little bit late…).

Every Saturday, she features a blogger reading to their little one, and Jack and I chose to read Big Sharks.

(Pauline’s always looking for new people to feature… record yourself, upload it to YouTube, and send her the link!)

Michael is currently too cool for the camera, so he played videographer.

At about 3:10 into the video, Jack has an America’s Funniest Home Video moment… Steve thinks I should send it in…

What do you think?

(P.S. I am multi-tasking and counting this as 40 of 52 of Where’s Mom?)

Nope. It doesn’t look any cooler when it’s spelled out like that.

106.

That looks even hotter.

One-oh-six.

Nope. Still hot.

Hot, hot, hot.

No matter how you write it.

It was 106 degrees today.

The boys are lying on the couch, the air conditioning is on, and the tv is entertaining us.

We ran our errands this morning, we were productive.

We jumped in the pool after lunch, so they got some energy out.

But now? It’s too hot to do anything.

And we’ve got 5 more weeks of break to go.

I thought I would share a bit of our summer plans with you.

If you’re a local reader, I hope you can take advantage of some of these things.

If you’re not local, I hope that your town has something similar to offer.

1. Grand Cinemas Summer Movie Club Until August 6th, Grand Cinemas is offering free movie showings for kids under the age of 10. Anyone over the age of 10 pays $2 a show. Did you read that again? FREE movies in an air-conditioned theatre. Eligible shows are played Mon-Fri at 10 am, with 2 different movies to choose from every day. The movie selection changes every week. We’re taking advantage of this, and are especially excited about seeing Pete’s Dragon and Little Rascals.

2. The pool. Sadly, many of the city pools are closed for the summer because of the budget. We are fortunate enough to have our own pool. We often invite friends over and the kids never get tired of swimming.

3. Dairy Queen Where else can you still get an ice cream cone for under $2? It’s hot here, so we are pretty generous during the summer with letting the boys have  ice cream and ice pops. When it’s just too hot to go outside and play, a trip to DQ is a great way to pass the time.

4.Chick-Fil-A (Also known as, the cleanest fast food restaurant in Tucson) We love Chick-Fil-A. Throughout the school year my girlfriend Eileen, her sister Lisa, and I would often meet at Chick-Fil-A with our collective 4 kids. Sometimes we would go to the zoo or the Children’s Museum first, but often, we would just meet at Chick-Fil-A for a really long lunch.

The restaurant, the play area, and the bathrooms are clean. The staff is among the friendliest group of people I have met. The food – yummy! And… ready for this? They have balloons. And a nice man named Robert that is eager to blow them up for the kids before they even ask.

Sold.

The kids love to eat lunch and then play together in the play area. And the Moms? We can chat, watch our kids play, and relax for a bit. During the summer, in the 100 degree heat? Chick-Fil-A is an undiscovered treasure for Moms.

5. Pump it Up Three days a week, they open up their gym for kids to jump and get some energy out. It’s air conditioned and fun, and we all leave tired. 2 nights a week, they have a family jump night, and… get this… on the first Tuesday of each month, they have a Sensory Jump Night for children on the Autistic Spectrum. Reservations are required for that night, to keep groups small and less stimulating for the kids.

So tell me, what are you planning to do this summer?

I heard this the other day and had to share… It’s ingenious.

Do you have a problem getting your kids to stay put at the dinner table?

(I did for a bit, but they stay put now.)

Light a candle.

It keeps their attention while their eating, and they’re less likely to get up and walk around.

My neighbor swears that it works.

As we got talking about it, we got to thinking…

You could use tea lights so that it would burn down faster, and make it more exciting.

You could let the child pick our their own candle colors.

Depending on the age of the child, you could let them help light it.

Depending on your level of craftiness, I bet you could make your own candles together!

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this before.

I was catching up on some blogs today and stopped when I saw Lolli’s post

Actually, I usually stop when I see her posts because she does these great photography tutorials with Manic Mother. Perfect for me because they have lots of pictures :)

Anyway, Lolli listed all of her contact information for her readers, and I thought that was a great idea!

So, here you go…

A quick note – If you’re not on Twitter, you’re missing out.

On stuff like this:

It’s a great place to connect with companies and blog readers. I’ve also met a few new friends, as well (Pauline lives just 10 minutes away)!

So, go on… find me!

See this 9 year-old right here?

He’s pretty amazing.

He loves to race BMX bikes:

He climbs rocks {and mountains}:

He also swims, plays basketball and football with his friends, and has recently taken a liking to wrestling.

And he consistently earns straight A’s on his report cards.

His Dad and I are so proud of him.

One thing that drives us batty, though?

The video games.

Gamecube, Sega, Wii, DS, PSP…

They drive. us. crazy.

“Can I play DS?”

“Can I play PSP?”

“Mom, can I play Wii with Jack?” (This is my favorite, because he thinks that if he mentions Jack, we’ll give in.)

We used to hear these questions every 30 minutes.

But we don’t anymore.

Through {lots of} trial an error, we figured out a system.

It totally works for us.

I never thought much about it, or considered it “our system” until I was talking to another Mom at Apple Camp last summer.

She overheard Michael ask me if Apple Camp qualified him for extra video game time (it didn’t) and asked what we were talking about.

Then she asked to hear more about what we do.

Then she told all the other Moms at the camp.

That was a little embarrassing.

So, I thought maybe someone else could benefit from our trials.

You’re welcome :)

Here are our rules:

1. No video games on school nights. Michael’s not allowed to ask to play video games on a school night. I don’t ever want him rushing through his homework to get on his PSP, and with the busy evening schedule we have I don’t want to be asked every few minutes. So, if you happen to see Michael playing video games on a school night, it’s because I am being selfish. Because I said “Hey, Michael. Go grab your DS so I can have a few minutes of quiet.”

2. Unless there’s a “special occasion” (see #4), no more than 4 hours of games on the weekend. 4 hours may seem like a lot to some of you. Don’t forget, Michael earns all A’s on his report cards, hasn’t gotten into trouble at school since kindergarten, and is a great kid. He does chores {usually without whining} and helps around the house when asked. That said, he can choose to use all 4 hours on Friday night or spread it out throughout the weekend. But once it’s gone, it’s gone… kind of…

3. It’s possible to earn more game time. Michael can earn more time in front of the screen, but he has to go outside to do it. Roughly, 1 hour of outside play time earns him 30 minutes of video game time. And no, he can’t earn weeknight play time.

4. Playing at a friend’s house is considered a “special occasion.” As are report card weekends, sleepovers, and nights that we hire a babysitter. We don’t want to have the “boring” house that Michael always wants to get away from. We allow more video game time when friends are over, and when he is at a friend’s house playing, he plays by their rules. Yes, *gulp* if Scott’s Mom lets him have video game marathons, then Michael gets to do that, too. (We decided this through trial and error. For a while, nobody wanted to come to our house, and Michael always wanted to leave. We took that as a hint that maybe we were being a little too controlling.)

5. Every once in a while, throw in a “marathon day.” Yup, you heard it right. This is a new idea, we have only done it once. But I think it’ll be good. Maybe he’ll get bored after a few hours… maybe he’ll find something better to do… maybe he’ll play for 12 hours straight and end up with crossed eyes. We don’t know. But I wonder if, over time, he plays less…? There’s only one way to find out.

The bottom line? Tell your little addict when they can play. Tell them when they can ask to play. This has made a world of difference in our house.

My favorite blog reader is: Michelle. Why? Because she made me a strap for my new camera. And because she’s awesome.

Isn’t it beautiful? It’s sparkly, too. I would have taken pictures with my point and shoot instead of my cell phone, but I can’t find it it’s sad about being upgraded and is hiding somewhere.

My budding cell phone photographer, Michael, took this as I was snapping pictures of my new flowers.

I can actually hear you all asking me:

“Didn’t you just plant an herb garden?”

Yes, I did. But, I killed the cilantro last night, and today Jack bought me some flowers.

Movingrightalong.

I’m reading: House Rules and Bloggertunity. {BTW, both amazing reads}

My favorite post is: Denise’s hilarious post. I still have doubts that it was peanut butter, but she’s sticking to her story.

My favorite gift to give: Camera strap covers. I have 2 of Shey’s, which means that yes, I have a total of 3 camera strap covers. Could you pick just one?

My favorite lip balm is: Twist and Pout by Ballmania. Bought one in Hawaii and I am addicted, as are the kids and hubby. I just ordered some more (they have some with clips on them!).

I’m so excited about: Designing my new business cards for Bloggy Boot Camp! Are you going?!

It’s coming up, you know.

Our trip.

What, did you forget?

I didn’t.

To be honest, it’s coming up a little too fast.

I’m constantly reminded of all of the cookies and Coke I consumed during the past few months.

You know, the ones that are stuck on my butt?

Yeah, those.

I find myself daydreaming about this:

And then thinking about this:

Yeah…  oops.

It’s only been 4 months, but that bikini doesn’t fit me quite the same anymore.

I guess during the Christmas party season I forgot that I might need to wear it again.

Good thing that Athleta still had these in stock:

Because I may or may not have purchased one this week.

But despite what it seems, I’m not admitting defeat quite yet.

I’m working hard at being able to wear the bikini top, and I still have a fighting chance.

Thanks to these:

and this little piece of magic:

Oh, and this bar thingy? Amazing. I’ll tell you a secret – I can’t do a sit up without it.

This is helpful, too. Just don’t let the kids get a hold of it. Or do. It’s kind of funny.

Oh, and this helps, too. It’s my favorite. Except for the “Cardio Party.” Yeah, notsomuchaparty.

I am not one to be giving out exercise advice, but somehow {giving complete credit to the above products} I have lost about 20 sticks of butter since Christmas. I have yet to see where those sticks of butter came from (my toes do look a little slimmer), but I’m happy nonetheless.

Secrets? No, I don’t have any.

I run when I can, sneak 15 minute workouts in whenever Jack gives me a free minute (or 15), and try not to eat too many girl scout cookies. Oh, and I stopped drinking my daily Coke.

Because though they are Hawaiian in origin, I can’t fathom having to wear a muumuu in Hawaii.

Though if I had to, I would rock one.

This week, Mom is being sneaky. Here’s a beautiful black and white picture for you:

Because after a long day at work, Mom deserves to have a black and white picture posted on the blog. Color just wasn’t cutting it… even with the help of my friend Picnik.

Michael and I were working on Jack’s valentines. They are adorable!!

Wanna see?

I saw these yesterday morning on Christie’s blog (who got the idea from Alyssa), and we had the picture taken and printed by last night.

Stinkin’ adorable, if you ask me.

Oh, and a computer update – I got my laptop back, upgraded my iPhoto software, and guess what happened?

I got back 352 pictures!!

I have no idea how, or why those photos were the “chosen ones,” and neither does my Mac guy. But I don’t care.  I got ‘em!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some valentines to finish…

For more Where’s Mom pictures, go visit Carin!

I have recently discovered guacamole.

Yes, I was sheltered growing up. (Just kidding, Mom!)

Last week, we had some friends over. I decided to make good use of my Pioneer Woman cookbook and make her guacamole.

Yum.

Did I say yum?

It was super easy and so tasty.

Everyone kept asking if I made it and where I got the recipe.

So, as we were looking through the cookbook…

Friend 1: Um…  do you know there’s an avocado seed in your guacamole?

Me: What? How did that get in there?… Just kidding. It keeps the guacamole from browning.

Friend 2: WHAT? I’ve never heard that. Does it work?

Me: Well, the guacamole isn’t brown.

Friend 3: How come you never told me that before?

Me: I thought everyone knew it. I never thought about it before.

Friend 2: Well, thanks. I’ve been making guacamole for years and never knew about it.

So, friends… I am telling you now.

I wish I knew where I learned it.

I can’t remember.

Obviously not from experience because I have only recently started making guacamole.
