I’ve never been much of a coffee drinker. It tastes too much like… coffee. Bitter. Blech.
But give me a blended chocolaty coffee drink, or a “girlie iced-coffee,” and I’m all in.
When Jack was born, my sister-in-law brought a Peanut Butter Mocharita to the hospital for me. It was our local coffee shop’s version of a blended coffee (served in a huge margarita glass, if ordered in the store). The peanut butter, chocolate, and coffee blended together was the yummiest drink I had ever tasted. I may have become slightly addicted to the PBMR’s during Jack’s first years of life.
Since then, that coffee shop has closed down. The only other option for coffee around here is Starbucks, and to be honest, I’m not a huge fan. I love their iced Via packets (I use them in my Shakeology), and I’m always carrying one of their reusable cups for my water, but their coffee just doesn’t amaze me.
I’m usually more of a tea kind of girl anyway. I make homemade iced tea and sweet tea, and I’m always start my morning with hot spiced tea during the winter months.
For the past ten years, I have owned a coffee maker. It happens to be a cheap one that I found at a Black Friday sale – I think I paid $5 for it, and if we’re being honest here, I never figured out how to use it. I bought filters and kept a big bag of coffee in my freezer at all times (that’s where you’re supposed to store coffee, right?) and even had some Sweet-N-Low packets in my pantry that I bought for my Mom a few years ago. When company came I would unearth the coffee maker from my storage cabinet in the laundry room. I always warned guests that I would get everything out for coffee, but for their own safety, they should probably make it themselves.
My sister-in-law came out to visit a few weeks ago and as I thought of digging our cheap coffee maker out of storage, I thought that it would be nice to have something a little nicer for company.
It got me thinking…
I heard that the Keurig machine makes tea. Iced tea, hot tea, any kind of tea. It makes hot apple cider and hot chocolate, as well. My boys love hot chocolate. Like, love it so much that they drink it in the summer. That’s love.
So, I thought some more. I asked several family members who have a Keurig what their favorite features are. I wanted to know how much this non-coffee drinker should spend on a coffee pot.
“Everyone can drink what they want.”
“It’s so fast. And easy.”
“I will never use a regular coffee pot again.”
Hmph. That’s a lot of love.
I compared features and prices. I decided that if I was going to pay $99 for a coffee maker, I might as well spend $150 for one at Costco that comes with $40 worth of coffee and a $15 reusable cup. The reusable cup can be used with coffee or tea that doesn’t yet come sold as a K-cup, which the Keurig uses to brew each cup of goodness.
I did it. I bought a Keurig, the top model from Costco, and have finally entered the world of “adult coffee drinker” or “big girl,” if you ask me. I have been having so much fun that I may have purchased enough coffee to caffinate a sorority house on a Sunday morning.
I have learned that coffee creamer can flavor your coffee, making it taste like yummy girlie coffee in record time! I have heard it’s customary for coffee drinkers to have one bottle of creamer in their fridge at a time, but I currently have 3. Who wants the same coffee every morning? I’ve combined hot chocolate and coffee to make a mocha, added French Vanilla to cinnamon flavored coffee, Caramel Macchiato to breakfast coffee, and pumpkin spice creamer to pumpkin spice coffee. Yum. Yum. Yum. It’s like a coffeehouse in my kitchen – my friend Lora called my new passion “Becca-bucks” – like Starbucks, but better.
The boys have been enjoying hot chocolate (with flavored creamers) a few nights a week, and Michael has loved playing barista. Last week while there were three coffee drinkers in the house, Michael woke up early every morning to brew our favorites. My sister-in-law’s mother-in-law (hmm… have to think about that one, huh?) was visiting as well, and Michael became an expert at making tea for her.
You can be sure that from now on, I’ll be blogging with a hot cup of coffee next to me, made perfectly with my new Keurig. Since I can’t imagine drinking the same coffee every day, I’m asking you… What’s your favorite coffee and creamer? What should I try?
And I also want to know how many of you have a Keurig and failed to tell me how amazing it is.
I was not compensated for this review, but just had to share my love of this product. I am open to providing reviews, though, so if you’re looking for someone to review your fancy coffee or coffee mugs, feel free to email me.

No Keurig here, I have some Coffeemate thing and if we’re being honest I have no idea how to use it – my husband does.
I went from drinking only fancy girly drinks to drinking straight black coffee. I don’t know what caused the change but there it is. We LOVE getting the whole beans from Sprouts and we mix the macadamia and chocolate beans and grind them at home before we brew the coffee.
I have been eyeing the Keurig though because it looks easy enough for me to use haha!

I have learned that you shouldn’t put coffee in the freezer or fridge. It should be stored in an air-tight container in a dark place. Why? How should I know. Haven’t gotten that far and beside that, my coffee doesn’t last long enough to be stored for very long. So, just sayin’…
No Keurig for me. I would love it! Kendra has one, or something similar. The problem is that I drink too much coffee. I would feel wasteful using 3 or 4 of those little cups in a day :( I like the idea of quick tea or hot cocoa though. Tea is one thing that I love in the evenings, especially when it’s cool, but I never seem to make it right!

Congrats! We love our Keurig in the Brace household. During the winter, I have been known to have several cups a day. During the summer, I have been enjoying the Arnold Palmer mix. I would be happy to brew you a cup if you would like to try it. We do not drink coffee every day, but it sure is nice to brew up some fun treats and is way cheaper than Starbuck’s.
I love my Keurig! I love the Newman’s k-cups from Costco with either Coffee Mate Vanilla, Hazelnut or Italian Sweet Cream! Yummers! :-p
I love coffee. Drank it on and off through high school, but college got me hooked. My Mom, being a teacher, I guess was issued coffee with her ruler, glasses on a chain, and desk with an apple on it, so she has always been a big coffee drinker. My younger siblings never cared too much for it and still don’t.
My work sort of lives on coffee too. People in the law enforcement field probably drink it just as much as anyone else. In 2009 I was working wth a Federal agency, and just in ONE bank of desks we had THREE coffee makers, and one was one of those big 40 cup deals like they have at catered events.
I had my first Starbucks coffee in 2004. They weren’t too big down South where I live then, so I was in Dulles Aiport outside of DC headed overseas, and a nice old gentleman and I struck up a conversation. Being an (old) soldier himself (WWII vet, he was cool) we talked for our whole 5 hour lay over. He bought cups of coffee for both of us as soon as one of us went dry. It really didn’t trip my trigger like Waffle House or home made coffee did, and I generally try to avoid it. Not really big on their politics either. Dunkin Donuts is my heart and soul. The closet one to me is a half hour away, and I have all of the ones within an hour drive to me saved on my phone’s GPS map. When I am on long road trips (like my one tomorrow to DC), I will often go out of my way to go to a Dunkin Donuts. I drove 45 minutes one-way back in April just so I could have a cup..
Keurig is great, but not cost effective for me. I drink 4+ cups a day, and I would kill a box of K-Cups in no time…maybe if they would sponsor me I could swing it. And there is just SOMETHING about the smell of a pot of coffee brewing and steeping that just soothes and calms me down…
I am hoping to get Mr. B one for Christmas! It looks great!

I officially retract a recent invitation for you to come over for coffee. I do not have a fancy schmancy coffee maker and would feel wasteful using it at home with as much coffee as I drink. Please come over for tea anytime though. I like that stuff too and have a selection of choices- you will have to mess with bags and hot water, though.
We actually have a fancy industrial Keurig at work and it is perfect for families and staff. We can all brew what we want. I keep a box of Kona cups (the hard stuff) and a box Macadamia Nut Cookie cups (the dessert) in my locker to get me through the shift. You didn’t know there were coffee courses, did you?
P.S. Love the “Becca-bucks” title.
