Uncle!

August 30, 2010

I have a confession to make.

I don’t like to run.

I said I did, because I was trying to live by the “fake it till you make it” mantra.

So, I thought positive thoughts.

I got up in the morning and ran with my friend, Tracie.

And I loved it.

Well, the part where I got one whole uninterrupted hour with Tracie. I loved that part.

But the pushing myself to take every step? The part where my teeth actually throbbed and my head pounded? The part where I had blisters on my feet where my arches were supposed to be? When I went to bed at night and my feet throbbed?

I didn’t like those parts.

But I talked myself into it.

“It’s good for your heart.”

“You’ll lose weight.”

“You’re a runner!”

I talked myself into it for 2 years.

2 years of 5k’s.

At least 10 of them.

5k’s with old friends,

5k’s with new friends,

and 5k’s with my boys.

I tried.

But I just don’t like it.

And I know that I’m not the only person who feels this way.

I love kickboxing.

I went for a great bike ride this morning.

Tomorrow, you can find me up at 5a.m. power walking with friends.

And I love doing videos like Turbo Jam and The Shred.

But running? Notsomuch.

So, I made a deal with myself.

One more 5k, then I’m allowed to cry “Uncle.”

Thoughts? What are your favorite ways to get in shape?

I know what you mean. I wish I could love running (well, I wish my knees weren’t jacked so I could actually pretend to love running…) I wish I could be one with the asphalt and nature and blah blah blah. But, I can’t. I love kickboxing- I need to find a good class to go to. What I usually do is elliptical (bad knees) and weights. Boring. But, it’s what’s easiest for me to get into :\

Power walking sounds good – still get your friend time, time outside, …

On a completely unrelated sidenote, Kaia was not happy as I scrolled down to read this post, she wanted to see your picture the whole time. “That’s Becca!” she would say everytime I scrolled back to let her take a peak.

I don’t like running either, but I give you huge props for trying so hard!! That is amazing that you did those 5ks when you didn’t even like doing it!

I started at Curves with my mom 2 months ago and haven’t felt better in my life! We go 3 times a week and I’ve lost 12 pounds!

You know – I wouldn’t say that I LOVE running either. Especially when I’m in the thick of it – heart pounding, lungs screaming, etc.

But…I do love the way I feel afterward. I also love the results.

Plus, running fits into my current season of life because it doesn’t involve money, babysitting, driving, etc.

I wish I could be the kind of runner who just feels compelled to run every day – in her cute ponytail and spandex. But I’m not.

I’m more the girl w/ the messy updo, flushed cheeks, terrible form, v-neck wicking shirt – trying my best. ;)

Good for you! Do what you enjoy!
I used to be the girl who would only run if someone was chasing her. Or maybe after a boy. Ahh but those are other stories for other days…

Well, I am so glad you posted this one. Remember your cousin Chey running the marathon in Cali – with a broken pelvis? Ouch – I remember your feet after your running in Basic Training – and the pizza delivery guy looked up at us and said “What the hell happened to her feet?” Well, power walking is just as good – and the turbo jam video we used at your house when I was there? That is awesome and the WII fit? I am reading more and more about how well people are doing with that. And you also have that ab machine (you know like the one I had that your father threw away on me) (Well, I guess that one wasn’t used so much – I noticed about 2 months after he threw it away) But, running, I can’t do it either and I am jealous when I see all those people out there doing it. But you, you will find your “Thing”. Although I think you are perfect just the way you are!!!

Oh yeah, what I meant to say was – It’s ok to cry “UNCLE” although I wish you could find a better word for it, maybe “AUNT”.

I loved running until this last year.

AS a matter of fact, the ONLY reason i run right now is that I love my running friend, and if we don’t run then I probably won’t get to see her three times a week..and I just can’t stand the thought of it…

But eventually, she will hit her near-40′s too, and maybe she’ll want to start power walking! ;)

I do not like that you posted this because I was just talking to my mom AND my husband that YOU run so maybe I could too. I mean, you were supposed to be my inspiration. Maybe I’ll just try to survive Turbo Jam again.

Becca,
I think I’m with you. I aspire to be a runner, but it just never works out for me. As far as that local marathon coming up, as I’ve told many, “I’d rather lick the sidewalk outside the boy’s bathroom-not inside-than run that thing.” Hiking? I’m in. Mountain biking? I’m in. Run? Only if there is a fire or something’s going to happen to a family member (or friend).

I’m not a runner either. But it’s grown on me. The only time that it’s bearable is just after the sun comes up. Then I come home after finishing two miles and not only is my workout for the day already done, but I feel totally invigorated, ready to start the day!

I’m not a runner either. Not.at.all

I do find this post so very honest and I find you inspiring. You do things that I sit on the couch and contemplate and then decide to pop in another oreo, cookie that is… :)
