Can you believe it?

Michael is 10 years old today.

It’s so hard for me to believe that we have been loving him, laughing with him, and learning from him for 10 years.

I thought it would be fun to share 10 facts about my big 10 year old:

1. Michael was born in Japan during a typhoon.

2. He had colic forever for the first 9 months of his life.

3. Michael’s nicknames are Michael-man and Michael McMichael.

4. He loves meat. Steak, chicken, pork… anything.

5. Michael is a straight A student.

6. He wants to be on the SWAT team when he gets older.

7. He loves chocolate.

8. He doesn’t eat at all anything much. (You know, since we won’t allow him to eat only meat and chocolate).

9. He hates his freckles.

10. Michael is kind. To the point that Steve and I can’t take credit for it because it’s something that can’t be learned. He just is.

And since I was the one in labor for 22 hours with him, I’m not stopping with my list of ten things…

Here are some of my favorite firsts:

We have experienced so many fun times that it would be impossible to list them all.

Dear Michael,

You probably don’t remember all of these moments, but Dad and I do.

I remember…

…the day that you refused to get off of the coffee table.

…when you used to wear your fireman boots every. single. day.

…not being able to pass by a fire station without stopping in to say hi to the firemen.

…you thinking that Aunt Katie was fibbing about Walter the Farting Dog, even as she was reading the book.

…the summer you learned to swim.

…lots of Mommy and Me days, like when we hung Ben’s Bells.

…hearing about all of your Daddy and Me days, like when you went to the 49ers game and met the team’s owner.

…how excited you were to have a little brother…

…and how excited he is to show you how much he loves you back.

Jack taking Michael’s temperature after he had his tonsils removed.

Happy, happy birthday Michael! We are so proud of everything you do, and we love you so much!

Happy Birthday Michael and Congratulations Becca for having such a wonderful young man. Oh and he will hate his freckles probably for the next 10 years or so. I finally accepted mine about the time I became an adult.

Michael, I don’t know what to say. Can you believe that Gramma Teetsie is at a loss for words? (Yes, Michelle, you beat me and that is ok – I forgive you).
Michael, I remember 10 years ago I was flying out to Japan to spend your whole first month. I never took a trip like that before, all by myself and I flew for 18 hours and couldn’t sleep because I was so nervous and excited all at the same time. I look through the scrap book that your Mom made me of my trip to Japan and you know what? I cry – because you are not that little boy anymore and I have missed so much of your growing up. You are 10 now – in 6 years you will be able to get your permit and all that money you have been saving for all your life – you can buy a car – and then you will be able to drive out here to visit us.
My friends get so tired of hearing about how special my Grandson is, but I don’t care – they will hear it every day until I can’t talk anymore. You are so special and kind and handsome and I love those freckles, each and every one of them. And I will tell you as much as I can that I love you to the moon and back a zillion trillion times and then some more.
Happy birthday Michael McMichael – Michael Man – Michael Robert Ludlum – you are now a “Tween”.
You can and will do anything you want to in life and I am proud to let people know that you are my “GRANDSON” I love you – Happy Birthday

Becca, this is so sweet! And so is Michael. This made me feel a little sad though, because Michael’s first ten years have flown by so fast. It doesn’t seem like ten years ago that I joined Grandma Teetsie in Japan to meet you – which reminds me… my passport has expired! Snap! I meant to renew it and now it will be a big hassle! Oh well, I hope I get it renewed before anymore of my grandchildren are born in foreign countries!

Michael, I know Grandma Teetsie can’t wait for you to drive out there to see her, but I will give you money for you to buy her an airline ticket to see YOU, if you figure out a way to stop growing up so fast! Please know that you are very loved, Michael, by so, so, so many family members and friends. Have a wonderful tenth birthday! I miss you and Grandpa Mike misses you too, so much! We love you!!! <3

And…another thing about Michael that people do not know, is that from the time he was about two years old; and I kid you not, he loved to take pictures and completed the job with incredible proficiency, we were in awe of his abilities. I will always always remember that talent he was born with, in my heart of hearts he was destined to win a Pulitzer for incredible talent. He loved hearing stories when he was little, you could not read to him enough.
I will never forget the summer of the “Hairy Vizard” in Maine. Michael had a slight speech impediment, and we were blessed one summer to have Michael and Becca visit our Maine vacation house. Andrea’s pet ferrett came along on our vacation, and when Michael and Becc graced our presence that year and he was enamored with “Buster” our pet ferrett and being from Arizona where lizard’s are plentiful he affectionately renamed Buster as the “Hairy Vizard.” Wonderful warm beautiful memories of a special and loved by so very many 10 year old. Happy Birthday Mike, we love you and miss you so much.

Happy Birthday Michael. You sound like a wonderful kid with an amazing family that loves you!

P.s. I love the fireman parts. We HAVE to say hello each time we drive by, which is daily because we live a mile from a station.
