Kids staying at the dinner table? Works for me!

May 25, 2010

I heard this the other day and had to share… It’s ingenious.

Do you have a problem getting your kids to stay put at the dinner table?

(I did for a bit, but they stay put now.)

Light a candle.

It keeps their attention while their eating, and they’re less likely to get up and walk around.

My neighbor swears that it works.

As we got talking about it, we got to thinking…

You could use tea lights so that it would burn down faster, and make it more exciting.

You could let the child pick our their own candle colors.

Depending on the age of the child, you could let them help light it.

Depending on your level of craftiness, I bet you could make your own candles together!

I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this before.

Pretty much temped to go wake up my kids, take them to the store, buy a candle, and force them to eat dinner again to see if this works.
Brilliant.

That’s an awesome idea! I’m off to pull some candles out of the cabinets now.

That is a great idea and adds to the ambiance. I have to ask…did anyone try to blow out the candle during dinner b/c that’s what would happen in my house.

Cool idea! I laugh though, and hope Chelsea reads this. In her family Lilly would blow it out!

Interesting. I never had problems getting my kids to stay at the dinner table, I have problems getting them to eat! But that’s a crafty idea to get them to stay put. Wonder if it would work for bed time…

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE NUMBER OF THE NEAREST FIRE DEPARTMENT OR PUT IT ON SPEED DIAL. I know Jack only too well.

Of course, just like dirt and boys are synonymous, so is fire and boys.

What a great idea! I’ll have to try that. Although I can see my kid setting the table on fire or something. It’s just the kind of thing that happens around my house.
