Where’s Mom? (28 of 52)

March 24, 2010

Mom has a black thumb… It’s no secret.

When we were in Hawaii, Steve mentioned that it would be nice to grow somethingorother and Michael said, “Well, Mom’s not good at that. You know, growing things.”

I’ll show them.

Today, I planted an herb garden.

Sure (pronounced “shore”) did.

I use a lot of herbs, and I wanted one.

I tried to grow one in December, when Darcie bought me an adorable little windowsill garden, but I killed them.

This time, she told me that maybe I should buy the herbs (as opposed to the seeds) and try to just keep them alive.

Gotcha.

Today, I went with a friend (who has a bright green thumb) to pick out some herbs.

Then, the kids and I (and some helpful neighbors) went to work.

Viola!

We have 2 kinds of basil, cilantro, green onions, tarragon, and a tomato plant for Michael.

Who is joining us for dinner?

Looks so pretty. I don’t have a green thumb either. Hopefully those critters you have running around in your backyard like any of those herbs.

Good for you. I can not wait to hear about how well Michael’s tomato’s do. You know this is how I feel about it if you had dirt and grass you would be able to grow things but I believe that where you live you only have dust and stones so that is why you do not have a green thumb things just do not do well in that kind of soil or lack there of. So it is absolutely NOT your fault. Let me think about what my excuse is? Okay I use to have wonderful vegetable gardens but the deer and the cows and all the other critters would enjoy it before I got to so I just gave up. Yup. that’s my story and I am sticking to it. Great luck.

Are they dead yet? If it were me, they’d be dead now.
I killed a cactus once. How, you ask? No clue. But I did. Killed it good.

Good luck!

Hey, I always have herbs growing when we can have things growing in Chicago…anyway, if the Basil makes it you need to pinch it every once in a while so it gets bushy, and not long and stringy. You will get more that way, and it will grow better. I found a purple basil that is outstanding. If you can’t use it right then and there you can put it in a little baggy for a few days, or turn it upside down and dry it somewhere. I just keep it in a jar, and it is so much better than what you can buy at the store. Just sayin…..love your blog!
